]]>
Trucks have long been one of America’s favorite vehicles. Built for both work and play, they offer plenty of room for people and cargo, and they can tow, too. And even if you can’t afford a brand-new truck, with some persistence and a bit of luck, you can still find used trucks under $10,000 if you’re shopping on a tight budget.

Best Used Trucks Under $10,000

In light of the current car sales market, you’ll find that your options are limited in terms of the number of used trucks under $10,000 available. Many of the current offerings are older models with high mileage, though you will still have some choices when it comes to bed size, cab configuration, and available features.

Depending on whether you want a light-duty truck or a heavy-duty hauler, you may find that your options are even more limited. Below we’ve outlined 10 of the best used trucks under $10,000 that you can find on the market today.

Though many of these trucks are older, these models will be your best bet for finding a used pickup in decent condition that still has some miles left. As with any used vehicle purchase, be sure to do your homework before buying.

Toyota Tacoma

white toyota tacoma The Toyota Tacoma has long been one of the best-selling mid-size trucks on the market. If you want a compact pickup that is known for its reliability, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a better option than the Tacoma. For under the $10,000 mark, you’ll likely be looking at models from the early to mid-2000s which spans the first and second generation of the Tacoma.

The Tacoma was offered with several cab configurations and truck bed lengths, so keep an eye open when shopping online. Opt for the two-wheel-drive, short bed, single cab if you want something maneuverable and light. Otherwise, the larger option — the extended or double cab of the second-gen models —  with 4WD should satisfy all your weekend outing needs.

Additionally, Tacomas have superior resale value. When you’re ready to sell, you should be able to get a good price for your truck, as long as you took care of it. And the cost of Tacoma ownership is usually low making this versatile truck a great bargain option.

Ford Ranger

2011 Ford Ranger

With all the hype surrounding the Ford Ranger these days, it would be fun to drive a used model if you can’t afford a shiny new one. The third-generation Ranger (1998-2011) was a staple in the American automaker’s lineup and came in regular and extended-cab body styles.

Though this compact truck didn’t have all the bells and whistles, it was durable and utilitarian. The Ranger was available with either a 4 or 6-cylinder engine, though the 4.0L V6 is the way to go if you can find a used truck under $10,000 with that option.

And good news for your wallet — if you need any parts down the road, you won’t need to look far or pay a fortune. Ford made a generous supply of parts for the Ranger, making this an affordable truck to repair.

Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Chevrolet Silverado 1500For more than two decades, Chevrolet has offered the midsize 1500 which has proven itself time and time again to be a well-built option for the American driver. Chevy has sold about 400,000 Silverados annually since the end of the 1990s.

Over the years, the Silverado has been offered in more than a few configurations. You can opt for everything from a single cab, short bed V8 to a crew cab V6 or a quad-cab V8. For under $10,000, you find plenty of first or second-generation 1500s spanning the 1998-2007 year models to choose from with more than a few bare-bones work trucks thrown into the mix.

If you like to go off-road, you’ll even find that this is one of the more capable 4×4 trucks, often optioned with Chevy’s off-road package. And if you can’t find one already equipped with the off-road goodies, the Silverado 1500 has plenty of aftermarket support should you decide to make the truck even more off-road capable.

Dodge Ram 1500

2008 Dodge Ram 1500 - drivers side viewJust like its Ford, GMC, and Chevy competitors, the Dodge Ram 1500 is a good, all-around package. Even the older versions of this truck have exceptional payload capacity and ample power. What Ram does differently, though, is add a little more style than some of the other used truck options on the market.

In your search for a used truck under $10,000, most of the Dodge Ram 1500s available will have high mileage — definitely north of 150,000 miles with some used models clocking in around 200,000 miles — though you should be able to snag a slightly newer model year from the truck’s second or third generation, in the range of 2011-2014.

The Ram 1500 was available with either two-wheel-drive or four-wheel-drive with either a regular crew cab and a more spacious quad cab. Optioned with either a V6 or V8, a well-maintained Ram 1500 should be good used truck purchase to keep on trucking.

Ford F-150

2014 Ford F-150 - left front viewThe Ford F-150 has long been one of America’s favorite trucks and for good reason. If you aren’t worried about a truck with high mileage, you should have no trouble finding an eleventh-generation F-150 (2004-2008) in your price range. If you have a little extra money to spare, go for the twelfth generation (2009-2014) instead.

The best reason to consider a newer generation model if you can afford it is so you can opt for the EcoBoost engine which is quite fuel-efficient. Of course, you won’t find as many F-150s in your price range, so if you need a specific setup, you’ll have better luck shopping for older generations of the Ford F-150 instead.

The good news is that these well-made, workhorse trucks hold up well and are known for their reliability and ease of maintenance. Whether you need a truck for work or are looking for a weekend hauler that can tow a small load, the F-150 is a versatile option with a long history to back it up.

GMC Sierra 1500

2014 GMC Sierra - left front viewThe Silverado and Sierra are twins, except the GMC version of this truck is a little more classy and upscale. Put in other terms, the Silverado 1500 was made to be a work truck, while the Sierra 1500 is a great family hauler or daily driver with a few extra creature comforts. And it is plenty durable to do some heavy-duty hauling too if that’s what you have in mind.

The Sierra 1500 could be optioned with many different packages. When shopping for a used version, you can often find a variety of trim levels, cab sizes, bed lengths, and engines. Although the higher-end trim packages might blow your budget.

Expect these used trucks under $10,000 to have high mileage, and look for model years ranging from 1999-2014 (the second and third-generation Sierra 1500).

Honda Ridgeline

2014 Honda Ridgeline - right front viewIf you want a truck that rides like an SUV, you’ll be thrilled with the Honda Ridgeline. It shares the same underpinnings as the Acura MDX and Honda Pilot.

This unibody pickup also has the fuel economy of a compact pickup to save you some cash at the pump. The Ridgeline is more suited to a commuter lifestyle than that of a heavy-duty hauler. For under $10,000, you’ll be shopping the first-generation Ridgeline which was in production from 2006-2015.

And don’t get us wrong; the first generation isn’t lazy. It still is capable of towing and has plenty of space in the bed. It also comes with an in-bed trunk, barn-door opening tailgate, and a flatbed floor — all great features for hauling smaller gear and weekend toys. Backing all that up is Honda’s reputation for reliability — never a bad thing when shopping used trucks.

Chevrolet Avalanche

2013 Chevrolet Avalanche - right front viewThe second-generation Chevrolet Avalanche (2007-2012) is a light-duty pickup option that can be found used for under $10,000. The truck came with an extendable bed with a fold-down rear truck wall. This mid-gate makes the truck extremely versatile, depending on what type of gear you want to haul.

This generation also featured some great crash test scores, making it a great family vehicle. The Avalanche also had a more refined, SUV-like ride and the standard V8 engine gives it plenty of punch. The second-gen Avalanche was available in three trim levels as well.

Finding a used model with lower mileage (most models for sale are sitting around 200,000 miles) will be a challenge, but if you spot a low mileage, well-maintained Avalanche under $10,000 you might have scored a deal.

Toyota Tundra

Toyota Tundra

Because of its many generations and long production run, you should feel confident that the Toyota Tundra is one of the more reliable used trucks under $10,000 that you can find. You might have to go for one of the earlier generations to stay within budget, but even an older Tundra can still prove to be a worthwhile investment.

In terms of a Tundra under $10,000, you’ll likely be looking at a higher mileage model from the early to mid- 2000s, but thanks to Toyota’s renowned reliability, if you can find an older truck that’s been well-maintained, a Tundra can definitely be a reliable, budget-friendly option.

Opt for the four-wheel-drive double cab for added space and utility. If you plan to stick to the pavement, a two-wheel-drive regular cab might fit the bill. The Tundra was available with either a V6 or V8 so if you plan on towing, keep an eye open for the beefier V8 option.

Nissan Frontier

2013 Nissan Frontier - left front view

The second-generation (2005-2021) Nissan Frontier never reached the same popularity as the Tacoma, but because it wasn’t as popular, you might be able to find an older model year on the cheap. This midsize truck was capable and dependable in its own right and is worth a look when you’re shopping for used trucks under $10,000.

The Nissan Frontier was available with either an extended King Cab and crew cab configurations with either a 4- or 6-cylinder engine. Both rear-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive were options. For under $10,000, you should be able to opt for a Frontier with a mid-level trim.

Many of the two-wheel-drive models have relatively low mileage (compared to other used trucks under $10,000 on the market). It’s even possible to score an off-road Nismo with a supercharged V6 if you’re willing to go for a higher mileage model.

Get Shopping Now For Trucks Under $10,000

If you need to stick to a budget, but still want a quality pickup, you have a few options for trucks under $10,000. It might take a little extra leg-work to find the truck that suits your needs. All of these pickups offer reliability, comfort, and power — in a budget-friendly package that will get you where you need to go.

Hoonigan “This vs. Plaid”: Will Gas or Electricity Rule the Drag Strip? https://autowise.com/hoonigan-this-vs-plaid-episode-one-video/ Wed, 09 Feb 2022 14:07:39 +0000 https://autowise.com/?p=183858 Hoonigan “This vs. Plaid”: Will Gas or Electricity Rule the Drag Strip? Read More »

]]>
The Hoonigan crew is back at it again with another VS. showdown — this time pitting the epitome of electric speed against a bright blue gasoline monster. How this Hoonigan “This Vs. Plaid” drag race plays out might tell you a little something about the future — or have you nostalgically holding on to the past.

Episode 1: This Vs. Plaid

Hoonigan This Vs. Plaid: audi and tesla

In episode 1 of “This vs. Plaid,” the Hoonigan crew lines up two kinds of performance cars for a drag-off. The head-to-head competition starts with a spicy pairing — an Audi V10 R8 Plus versus a brand new Tesla Model S Plaid.

This is the first episode of several to come in which the Hoonigans test the Tesla Model S Plaid against some seriously heavy competition including domestic muscle, modified exotics, tuned imports, and even a dedicated drag Banshee.

With all the buzz about electric sports cars, they aim to get to the bottom of the hype. Or more realistically, because this is the Hoonigan crew, after all, to stack the Plaid against some stupendously modified and stupidly unpractical drag monsters.

As Brian Scott of the Hoonigan crew notes, the Plaid is polarizing — you’re either here to see it win or see it lose.

Hank Iroz’s Audi V10 R8 Plus Offers Stiff Competition

Audi V10 R8

Let’s be clear that this isn’t any old stock V10 R8 from the Audi factory. Hank Iroz has been building and maintaining specialty cars at Iroz Motorsports for years (he even took on Ken Block’s Hoonicorn in his deceivingly subdued-looking Audi RS3). This 2018 Audi R8 got some special treatment, too.

The twin-turbocharged 5.2L V10 now makes up to 1,700 hp and redlines at a whopping 9,200 rpm. Iroz notes that while the long-block engine’s bottom end is (miraculously) still stock, the driveline did get some big (likely custom) upgrades. These include a heavily built transmission and a big clutch to keep the R8 from tearing itself to shreds as the DCT rips through the gears.

The R8 also sports drag radials, with 245s in front and some meaty (though worn) 345s in the rear.

Tesla Model S Plaid

By contrast, the 2021 Tesla Model S Plaid, piloted by Jonathan Parzivand, shows up to Hoonigan start line stock. Of course, stock for a Plaid means a “modest” 1,020 hp and face-shattering amounts of torque. Remember, that’s in a family sedan that can drop a sub-2 second 0-60 and tops out at 200 mph.

Electric vs. Gasoline: The New Drag Debate

On paper, the R8 has the Plaid beat in terms of horsepower and also in terms of weight with the Plaid weighing in at 4,828 pounds and the R8 tipping the scales at a more trim 3,700 pounds. Both sport all-wheel-drive, though the Plaid puts down power through a single-speed automatic transmission versus the Audi’s DCT.

But in the brave new world of electric vehicles, does total wheel horsepower still mean you get to play the trump card? Add to that the fact that Iroz’s R8 can’t unleash its full 1,700 hp thanks to the pavement surface of the chosen drag strip and, well, the playing field might be looking a little bit more even.

Can the R8 deliver and prove we are still in the golden age of gasoline? Or will the Plaid make the ostentatious Audi look as old-fashioned as the dinosaur juice it runs on? You’ll have to watch to find out.

2022 Aston Martin DBX707 Aims To Be the “Alpha SUV” https://autowise.com/2022-aston-martin-dbx707-reveal/ Tue, 01 Feb 2022 13:00:59 +0000 https://autowise.com/?p=183491 2022 Aston Martin DBX707 Aims To Be the “Alpha SUV” Read More »

]]>
Today, Aston Martin announced the release of the 2022 Aston Martin DBX707 which the brand claims to be the “world’s most powerful luxury SUV.” The DBX707 replaces the DBX in Aston Martin’s lineup. The 542-hp DBX was Aston Martin’s first foray into the SUV waters, and the DBX707 promises to dramatically up the brand’s offering.

2022 Aston Martin DBX707: Pinnacle Performance

2022 Aston Martin DBX707 side view

Aston Martin calls the new DBX707 a “sabre in a segment of sledgehammers” — but what exactly does that mean when it comes to performance?

Under the hood, the DBX707 gets outfitted with a 4.0L twin-turbocharged V8 delivering 697 hp and 663 lb.-ft. of torque. The DBX707 also gets upgraded to Aston Martin’s 9-speed ‘wet clutch’ automatic transmission which allows for the big bumps in performance over the old DBX (V8).

2022 Aston Martin DBX707 rear view

Aston claims the new 9-speed tranny delivers faster and more direct gear changes as well as improves launch capability. The DBX707 can hoof it from 0-60 in 3.1 seconds — not showstopping (you won’t be beating any Teslas off the line) but still respectably quick for a 5-door SUV that weighs almost 5,000 pounds. Aston Martin records the top speed at 193 mph.

2022 Aston Martin DBX707 front view

In terms of stopping power, the DBX707 sports 6-piston calipers and carbon ceramic brakes. 22-inch rims are standard, or the DBX707 can be optioned with 23-inch alloy rims instead.

2022 Aston Martin DBX707 rims

The DBX707 also gets an updated electronic limited slip rear differential. Torque distribution front-to-rear remains fully automatic, but the driver also has the ability to direct 100% of the torque to the rear. Aston promises that this RWD biasing results in the “agility, sporting feel and dynamic character of a true sports car” — should you wish to forget you are, in fact, driving an SUV.

Go Ahead, Look Twice

2022 Aston Martin DBX707

The DBX707 wasn’t exactly meant to blend in with the crowd. The exterior gets a makeover that, in keeping with the times, features a larger front grille, a new front splitter, and a new lip spoiler on the roof wing.

2022 Aston Martin DBX707 on road rear view

Aston Martin claims these enhancements also aid in performance (read: improved cooling and aerodynamics) though they might as well be for show. You’ll likely never know the difference unless you’re taking the DBX707 out for some spirited laps of the Nürburgring.

2022 Aston Martin DBX707

Around back, the DBX707 gets a new rear bumper, a custom-tuned quad exhaust, and integrated quarter panel vents designed to accentuate the DBX707’s muscular, ground-hugging stance.

Inside the Beast

2022 Aston Martin DBX707 interior

The interior of the DBX707 is where the luxe really comes into view — though still in keeping with the SUV’s sporty vibes. From the 16-way electronically adjustable seats (heated front and rear) to the 14-speaker Aston Martin Premium Audio System, the cabin is decked with all the creatures comforts that should come standard in a luxury SUV.

2022 Aston Martin DBX707 seats

Customers can opt for one of three different interior finish-outs — all of which come with a healthy sprinkling of leather, embroidery, and Alcantara. Carbon fiber accents can be optioned in as well.

In terms of tech, the DBX707 gets the usual suite of modern-day features for both safety and convenience with a 12.3″ driver display and 10.25″ center console display dishing up the goods.

For customers who really want to go the extra exclusive mile, Aston Martin offers a bespoke service — Q by Aston Martin — to completely customize the DBX707. From exclusive colors and unique graphics to tinted carbons and only-in-your-car materials, these commissioned models are custom-tailored both inside and out.

A Superlative Price to Match

Wondering what a class-leading “alpha” SUV is going to set you back? Starting MSRP for the DBX707 sits at a cool $232,000 before options (no price mentioned for that bespoke Q customization).

That’s a solid $100k above the starting MSRP for the base 2021 Mercedes Benz G 550. Trust Aston Martin to deliver an SUV that makes a G-Class Merc look affordable. It even bests the Lamborghini Urus in terms of base model MSRP, proving that one-upping the SUV competition in all areas really was Aston Martin’s goal.

2022 Aston Martin DBX707

Of course, all those superlative claims have yet to be backed by some real-world consumer driving. Customers itching to put some miles on their very own DBX707 should be able to get behind the wheel this summer. Time will tell if the DBX707 holds up to its hype.

Ultimate Restomod Muscle: Ringbrothers 1969 Dodge Charger “CAPTIV” https://autowise.com/ringbrothers-custom-dodge-charger-captiv/ Wed, 19 Jan 2022 21:18:05 +0000 https://autowise.com/?p=183257 Ultimate Restomod Muscle: Ringbrothers 1969 Dodge Charger “CAPTIV” Read More »

]]>
The legendary Ringbrothers custom car shop has again created a one-of-a-kind jewel of a restomod. This 1969 Dodge Charger custom looks very similar to the original car, but the details, upgrades, and customization have touched every aspect of the vehicle and elevated it to something all new and genuinely drool-worthy.

Is the Ringbrothers “CAPTIV” the ultimate Charger restomod ever created? Let’s dive into the details and see what this custom muscle car has to offer.

A “CAPTIV” First Look

At first glance, the CAPTIV restomod is deceptively simple. You could be forgiven for mistaking it for a super clean 1969 Dodge Charger if it flashed by you on the highway. But lucky for us, the Ringbrothers take viewers on a closer walk-around where it quickly becomes apparent that every inch of this American muscle car got some serious TLC.

CAPTIV charger side view

From the custom BASF “Pile up Yellow” paint (based on Porsche‘s signal yellow color) to the subtle design of the supercharger (which was tastefully redesigned and covered so the blower wouldn’t stick out of the hood like an eyesore), the exterior is a symphonic testament to getting all those little details just right.

CAPTIV charger front view

The Charger was shipped initially to Ringbrothers by its owner, New Zealand-based motorsports legend and TV personality Greg Murphy. It started its restomod life as a rolling chassis — the whole car is almost all original sheet metal except for modifications Ringbrothers made to stretch or move the metal. They did this for the lowered rockers and cut-off front fenders.

CAPTIV Charger rear view

The extensive bodywork took around 800-1,000 hours to complete. And while the CAPTIV still screams Charger from a distance, an up-close look reveals that this muscle car got a complete custom makeover.

The Devilish Details

CAPTIV interior

The real magic of a custom build comes down to the fit and finish of each part, and here’s where the Ringbrother’s build really shines.

From the one-off turn indicators to the sleek door handles right down to the hood and trunk hinges, the CAPTIV Charger got retrofitted with some cool hardware that completes its look top to bottom, inside and out.

CAPTIV Charger interior

The interior, which Gary Ragel designed, features beefed-up Recaro seats sporting full custom upholstery by Upholstery Unlimited. The sleek dash flashes to life with a Motec C1212 gauge cluster. And as for the steering wheel, that carbon fiber-accented beauty is a fully custom Ringbrothers creation.

CAPTIV Charger steering wheel

Jim Ring succinctly sums up the philosophy behind the build: “If you can’t find something that works, you just build it.”

Now, that’s next-level customization.

Bring on the Hellcat

CAPTIV top view

Underneath, the CAPTIV Charger has been cleverly designed around the Flowmaster exhaust for a clean underbody that’s nearly as pretty as what’s under the hood (check out that QA1 carbon driveshaft).

CAPTIV Charger hellcat crate motor

We say almost because the Mopar Hellcat V8 steals the show in an engine bay that’s so clean you could eat off of it. The 707 hp crate engine mates to a Tremec six-speed manual transmission for some guaranteed smiles per mile.

CAPTIV Charger tires

Of course, all that power needs acreage of rubber, which the CAPTIV Charger sports in style. The custom Ringbrothers Edition Recoil HRE wheels are wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires with 295x35x19s up front and some monstrous 345x30x20s in the rear. The 6-piston Baer brakes complete the look — and keep the 707-hp monster in check.

4,240 Build Hours Later … CAPTIV Emerges

Ringbrothers CAPTIV Dodge Charger

All-in-all, the Ringbrothers’ CAPTIV restomod took a reported 4,240 work hours to perfect. Or, to put that in more relatable terms, that’d be like working 424 10-hour days straight in your garage to bring this beauty to life.

Ringbrothers CAPTIV Dodge Charger

The CAPTIV Charger is destined for New Zealand, so you won’t see it ripping around in the States. But we don’t doubt that this glorious muscle car restomod will be holding its Southern Hemisphere audience CAPTIV, as it’s sure to be a spellbinding sight as it roars down the road.

If you’re looking to buy one of the best 2 seater cars on the market today, you likely aren’t too worried about practicality or cargo space. You want the ultimate in performance and style — and are willing to give up the extra room to get it. These 2 seater cars offer the kind of driver’s experience that you just can’t get with a sedan, crossover, SUV, or truck.

11 Best 2 Seater Sports Cars

If you are one of these people, we salute you. You’ve said to hell with accommodations and are looking to make an emotional connection with the open road. So step out of your daily grind and get behind the wheel of one of these beauties. We doubt you’ll regret a minute you spend at the helm of one of the best 2 seater cars.

Aston Martin Vantage

Aston Martin Vantage

Holding true to Aston Martin’s form, the gorgeously styled Vantage is an agile missile with some seriously raw power under its sleek bonnet. The coupe comes with a 4L twin-turbo V8 that makes just over 500 hp and 500 lb.-ft. of torque. Combined with the ZF 8-speed automatic transmission, the Vantage hits 60 mph in just 3.6 seconds and has a top speed of 195 mph.

Inside, both driver and passenger are treated like royalty in the compact cockpit. The 8-way adjustable leather sports seats are heated and embossed with an Aston Martin Wings logo. From the sport-orientated gearshift paddles to the driver-centric center console, the Vantage is clearly designed to enhance the driver experience.

The Vantage is also available as a roadster and in an F1 Edition with special livery and a performance boost. Aston Martin is also teasing a V12 Vantage, rumored to be coming sometime in 2022.

Audi R8

blue Audi R8

Audi’s performance coupe is one of the best 2 seater cars designed for speed — and to turn heads. The 5.2L V10 makes up to 602 hp and 406 lb.-ft. of torque which is good for a top speed (on track) of 205 mph and a 0-60 of 3.2 seconds. From the carbon fiber touches to the sporty rims and brakes, the exterior of the R8 looks the part.

Inside, the Audi R8 balances a mix of simple, retro styling and modern cockpit design. Though decidedly less tech-heavy than some of its current counterparts, the R8 is focused on everything the driver needs — without all the flashy extras.

Front and center, the driver gets a 12.3-inch digital instrument display which, when the R8 is flipped into Sport mode, features a large tach and other performance stats. Which you might find is all you really care about when you get behind the wheel of this 2 seat, rear-wheel-drive bullet.

Chevrolet Corvette Stingray

2022 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray red

Chevrolet’s next generation of the iconic Corvette was designed to turn heads. Plus, thanks to those eye-catching Corvette colors, you can choose to make a statement. And though the styling might not be everyone’s cup of tea, this bold 2 seater sports car delivers on the thrills thanks to its mid-engine design.

That same 6.2L LT2 V8 engine makes easy work of 0-60 — with the top-end Z51 package, it boasts a speedy 2.9-second 0-60. But even without the top-level performance package, the V8 makes a perfectly respectable 495 hp and 470 lb.-ft. of torque making this Corvette the most powerful production Stingray yet. You can opt for either a 2 seat convertible or coupe.

Corvette claims the driver’s seat was inspired by fighter jets, and the wraparound dash and sleek center console caters to that feel. From the track-day-inspired and leather-wrapped seats to the shape of the steering wheel, this is one of the top 2 seater cars designed to make the driver feel right at home.

Jaguar F-Type

Jaguar F-Type R blue

The F-Type is Jaguar’s lean and athletic 2 seat sports car option. Available as both a coupe and a convertible, the F-Type can be optioned out with a variety of trims and performance upgrades. No matter how you option it, the sleek car comes with a V8 under the hood.

Depending on your package, the 5.0L V8 makes in the range of 444 to 575 hp. The top-of-the-line P450 V8 in the RWD model claims a top speed of 177 mph and a 0-60 of 4.4 seconds. Paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission, the F-type is available in either an all-wheel-drive or rear-wheel-drive configuration.

Opt for the Interior Luxury Pack to outfit the cabin with even more leather, premium lighting, and illuminated treadplates. Add heating and cooling to your 12-way adjustable driver’s seat, and you can bet the feel from behind the wheel is geared for comfort as well as smiles per mile.

Lotus Emira

Lotus Emira

The 2 seat Lotus Emira combined exotic looks with daily driver practicality. If you want a car that looks like a supercar but still offers plenty of comfort and functionality, the Emira is one 2 seater that is relatively affordable — at least when compared to a supercar.

The 3.5L supercharged V6 makes 360 hp and 310 lb.-ft. of torque which, when paired with the Emira’s tidy package, is good for a 4.3-second 0-60 and a top speed of 180 mph. The 2023 Emira will also be available with an inline 4.

The interior of the Emira is outfitted with plenty of creature comforts from USB chargers to cupholders, but the real fun is behind the wheel. Thanks to the clever aerodynamic package and driver-focused design, the Emira is finely tuned for high-speed corning as well as speed in a straight line. You can even opt for a 6-speed manual if you want to row your own gears for an even more immersive driving experience.

Mazda MX-5 Miata

Mazda MX-5 Miata

The Mazda Miata has long been considered one of the best affordable 2 seater cars on the market. And the newest iteration, the MX-5 Miata, holds true to that heritage with a lightweight, 2 seat design made for the driving enthusiast who might be shopping on a budget.

The MX-5 Miata makes 181 hp and 151 lb.-ft. of torque. Though those specs sound modest when compared to its 2 seater cars competition, the Miata’s 2,400 lb. curb weight quickly evens out the odds if you consider the power-to-weight ratio. Plus, with a 50-50 weight distribution, the Miata offers an agile and balanced feel behind the wheel.

You can opt for several different trim levels with the Grand Touring package including an upgraded leather interior. And as one of the few manual sports cars left, the MX-5 Miata should be on your shortlist if you’re searching for a stick shift.

Mercedes AMG GT

2022 Mercedes AMG GT

Mercedes continues to up their sports car game with the latest Mercedes AMG GT. This luxury sports car has a motorsports pedigree to back up its sleek good looks. The engineering behind the AMG GT results in a dramatic car that can take on the track as easily as it can cruise on the road.

The base AMG GT coupe comes standard with a 4.0L twin-turbo V8 that makes 523 hp and 494 lb.-ft. of torque. The AMG GT can sprint to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds. The V8 is mated to a 7-speed automatic transmission and delivers power to the rear wheels. Upgrade to the C or the Black Series, and you’ll see a bump to 550 and 720 ponies, respectively.

The cabin of the AMG GT benefits from Mercedes trademark opulent touches — from the heated and ventilated leather seats to the panorama roof. There’s plenty of tech sprinkled throughout the interior, too.

Nissan Z

2023 Nissan Z

The long-anticipated Z car update takes the best features of the 2 seat Nissan 370 Z and builds on them. The iconic sports car keeps its trademark looks but gets some significant power and tech upgrades.

The Nissan Z is the most powerful Z car to date, with a 3.0L twin-turbo V6 making 400-hp. Pair that with a 6-speed manual transmission, and you’ll be piloting this rear-wheel-drive sports car through the turns with a smile on your face. A 9-speed automatic transmission is also available.

Inside, the Nissan Z sits the driver squarely at the helm with a new digital gauge cluster, GT-R-inspired steering wheel, and a 9-inch touchscreen display. The specially designed performance seats are engineered to handle lateral loads and keep you firmly in place should you decide to take a spirited drive through the twisties.

Porsche 718 Cayman / Boxster

718 Cayman

No matter which flavor of the 718 you choose (and there are more than a couple models to choose from), you’ll be treated to Porsche’s legendary driving performance in a capable 2 seater. These mid-engine roadsters were designed to deliver precision handling for performance driving but also be comfortable enough for everyday use.

Performance specs vary between the models, but even if you opt for the base 718 Cayman, you’ll still be treated to 300 hp and 280 lb.-ft. of torque courtesy of the 2.0L turbocharged boxer 4. On the other end of the spectrum, the 718 Cayman GTS 4 offers 394 hp and around 309 lb.-ft. of torque from a 4.0L boxer 6.

Porsche doesn’t skimp on creature comforts on the inside, though the design is perhaps a bit more traditional and less flashy than other brands. That’s fine though as it won’t distract you from the business at hand — roaring down the open road. And if 2 seater cabriolets (i.e. convertibles) are more your style, opt for the 718 Boxster for a drop-top rendition.

Porsche 911 GT3

Porsche 911 GT3

If you want a true 2 seat 911, the 911 GT3 delivers an exceptional driver experience in one of Porsche’s most legendary models — without the annoyance of cramped back bucket seats. In this track-day-ready edition of the 911, the back seats are replaced with a rear seat delete for additional weight savings.

Available in a standard and grand touring configuration, both versions of the GT3 come with a 4.0L boxer 6 that makes 502 hp and 346 lb.-ft. of torque. When paired with rear-wheel drive and a 7-speed PDK, the GT3 rockets to 60 in 3.2 seconds and can max out at 197 mph. And, perhaps most importantly for the stick shift enthusiasts, the GT3 is available with a 6-speed manual option as well.

You should immediately feel at home behind the wheel, as the cockpit has been thoughtfully designed with a precision that nods to the 911’s motorsport heritage. From the heated sport seats to the GT3 sport steering wheel, you can cozy right in and get ready to tackle whatever road — or track — lies before you.

Toyota GR Supra

Toyota GR Supra

Toyota’s 2 seater sports car packs style and performance into a relatively affordable package. The sleek GR Supra is available in four trim levels all designed to deliver exceptional performance and handling in a 2 seat package.

The base GR Supra comes equipped with a 2.0L turbocharged inline-4 that makes 255 hp and 295 lb.-ft. of torque. If you want the maximum ponies available, you’ll have to opt for the A91-CT edition which sports a 3.0L turbocharged inline-6 that makes 382 hp and 368 lb.-ft. of torque. That’s good for a 3.9-second sprint to 60 and a top speed of 155 mph.

As far as the interior of the GR Supra goes, you’ll be greeted by a sporty mix of leather and Alcantara. The heated 14-way adjustable sport seats put you in the optimal position, and the 8.8-inch digital gauge cluster can be set to show the stats you care about whether you’re hustling on track or out for a cruise on the highway.

Get Behind the Wheel of the Top 2 Seater Cars

In any of these 2 seater cars, you can enjoy the open road as you zoom through the countryside or take a day trip to the city and show off your style. With so many great 2 seater cars on the market, both new and used, and it’s easy to see why you might opt for a 2 seater sports car with just enough room for two.

When it comes to high-speed acceleration and performance, it’s easy to overlook the humble pickup truck. Though they’re designed for transporting goods, tackling tricky terrain, and other utilitarian purposes, most hide a brawny engine under the hood. In some cases, those engines have more than enough power to offset their bulky chassis, producing unexpected, jaw-dropping performance. In fact, some of the fastest production trucks ever made for the U.S. market can give some sports cars a run for their money.

16 Fastest Production Trucks in America

Nissan Titan

2021 Nissan Titan

Nissan pickup trucks are not the most popular in North America. However, the vehicle manufacturer has been slowly gaining popularity, thanks in part to the Nissan Titan. Apart from being one of the fastest pickup trucks in the world, it is one of the most established models that Nissan offers in the States. The pickup does 0-60 in 7 seconds flat, with a top speed of 110 mph.

The secret behind the Titan’s speed is the truck’s beefy engine — a powerful 5.6L DOHC V8 engine (32-valve) that produces 400 hp at 5,800 rpm and 413 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,000 rpm. The engine also uses VVEL (Variable Valve Event and Lift) technology, which is instrumental in reducing fuel consumption, making it both fast and efficient.

Toyota Tacoma

2022 Toyota Tacoma

The popular Toyota Tacoma is a practical and versatile truck that packs some serious punch. If optioned with the 3.5L V6 powerplant, the Tacoma puts out 278 hp and 265 lb.-ft. of torque which is good for a top speed hovering around the 109 mph marker. In terms of acceleration, 0-60 is achievable in a tidy 7.0 seconds.

The base engine is an uninspiring 2.7L 4-cylinder, with a lackluster 159 hp. You can even opt for a 6-speed manual transmission if you prefer to row your own gears. And though the Tacoma lacks the towing capacity of the beefier Toyota Tundra, it is rated at 6,800 pounds which, depending on your use case, can still come in handy.

Toyota Tundra

2022 Toyota Tundra side view

Traditionally, the Toyota Tundra came with a V8 engine. One of the options was a 5.7L V8 that produces 401 lb.-ft. of torque and 381 hp which was good for a 6.7-second 0-60 mph, making it one of the fastest production trucks on the market. The latest 2022 Tundra TRD Pro comes with a 3.5L Twin-Turbo V6 that makes 437 hp and 583 lb.-ft. and runs up to 60 mph in 6 seconds flat.

The Tundra isn’t just fast; it’s also strong, boasting more torque than many of its competitors. And with a towing capacity of 12,000 pounds, the Tundra has plenty to offer in the realm of towing. However, though this pickup is fast and powerful, it is not efficient. It is the only pickup truck in its category that does not meet the 20 mpg on the highway mark. The 2022 Tundra is rated at 19 mpg combined.

Chevrolet Colorado

2022 Chevy Colorado

The Chevrolet Colorado is a popular truck that balances everyday practicality with boisterous engine performance. In higher-end trim levels, the Colorado sports a  3.6-liter V6 that produces a hearty 275 of lb.-ft. and 308 hp. With the power delivered using an 8-speed automatic transmission, the Colorado can hit 60 from a standstill in just 6.1 seconds.

Compared with the other available engine options, the V6 might not be the most economical, but with an estimated 25 mpg highway and 18 mpg city, it’s hardly a gas guzzler. If you’re looking for something fast that can pull a heavy load, the Colorado is one option.

Curiously, the similarly spec’d GMC Canyon doesn’t boast the same acceleration times. Though the GMC Canyon features similar hardware options, it hits 60 from a standstill in a slower (but still quick) 6.9 seconds. The Canyon might lose on acceleration, but it does have plusher trim options.

Ford F-150

Ford F150

Very few consumers were excited about Ford’s decision to redesign the most popular truck in America with an aluminum bed and body. As it turns out, the new F-150 packs a serious punch. While it’s not the fastest truck in the world, it’s not far off.

The redesign shaved a cool 700 pounds off of the F-150’s overall weight. The weight saving, in combination with the F-150’s 5L engine, boosted the truck’s performance significantly. It now produces 325 hp and 376 lb.-ft. of torque, with a top speed of 107 mph. And the 0 to 60 time? 5.6 seconds. This acceleration is as high as some of the (slower) sports cars in the world today.

Despite the excellent performance, the F-150’s efficiency is reasonable. It has an EPA rating of 20 mpg combined. Note that these fuel ratings change when you drive at high speeds or when you floor the pedal every chance you get. Ford also offers a 3.0L diesel option with superior fuel economy but far less performance.

Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Chevy Silverado 1500

The Chevrolet Silverado 1500 does 0-60 mph in an unbelievable 5.4 seconds. The secret to the Silverado’s success is the muscular 6.2L V8 engine producing a whopping 420 hp and 460 lb.-ft. of torque. The Silverado 1500’s engine includes cam profile changes determined by power needs, dynamic cam timing, and cylinder deactivation on two cylinders. For deactivation, low-power, and high-power capabilities, each camshaft offers each valve 2 or 3 different lift profiles.

Vintage Chevy enthusiasts will be pleased to know the old “Tri-Power” system has been brought back with this model. An electric water pump assists in reducing drag to the power system. Similarly, the GMC Sierra is also fairly quick when equipped with the V8 engine. However, despite sharing 99% of the same DNA as the Silverado, it hits 60 mph from a standstill at a slightly slower time of 6 seconds flat.

Dodge Ram R/T

Dodge Ram R-T

The Dodge RAM R/T can get from 0- 60 in 5.4 seconds. The 5.7L V8 engine is capable of producing 395 horses and a mammoth 410 lb.-ft. of torque and is backed by an 8-speed automatic gearbox.

Not only is it fast, but it also has decent pulling power. Capable of towing weights of up to 5,000 pounds, the RAM R/T manages to strike a healthy balance between sports performance and everyday practicality. It’s not ridiculously inefficient either. The fuel economy is rated at 14 mpg for city driving, which is decent for a truck of this size.

Ford F-150 SVT Lightning

Ford F-150 SVT Lightning

Though discontinued in 2004, the Ford F-150 SVT Lightning had a decade run as the fastest of the fast trucks, reportedly reaching a top speed of 147 mph. Compared with many modern-day trucks, it’s a veritable speed demon.

The Lightning’s success was thanks to its beautifully engineered — and supercharged — 5.4L V8. The result was an output of 380 hp, 450 lb.-ft. of peak torque, and a very impressive 0-60 time of 5.3 seconds.

Ford F-150 Raptor

2020 Ford F-150 Raptor Off-Road Front 3/4

The critically acclaimed Ford F-150 Raptor is no slouch on speed. Famed as an off-road beast thanks to its long-travel suspension and off-road lineage, this truck is a veritable powerhouse out on the trails. The Raptor also boasts serious on-road performance. The secret to the Raptor’s speed and success is down to the truck’s burly twin-turbo 3.5L V6 engine.

In terms of acceleration, this 450-hp beast can get the Raptor from 0-60 in a speedy 5.1 seconds. And with 510 lb.-ft. of torque and a max tow rating of 8,200 pounds, the Raptor isn’t a one-trick pony. While many Raptor fans might have been reeling when Ford ditched the V8 in favor of V6, with performance statistics like that, how can you complain?

Dodge Ram SRT-10

The Dodge Ram SRT-10 is one of the fastest production trucks

A list of fast trucks would not be complete without the Dodge Ram SRT-10, short-lived but speedy pickup only available from 2004 to 2006. This superfast truck had the same V10 engine featured in the Dodge Viper.

The engineers developed this bolt of lightning in 2004 using extensive wind tunnel testing and inserted the Viper engine, a 500-hp 8.3L V10 that generated up to 525 lb.-ft. of torque. The top speed for this monster was 155 mph. Capable of hitting 60 mph in 4.9 seconds, this is one of the fastest truck models to grace the nation’s roads.

GMC Syclone

GMC Syclone

The GMC Syclone is an oldie but a goody, and still one of the fastest production trucks in the world. The Syclone was only available for the 1991 and 1992 model years and fewer than 3,000 were ever produced making them very rare.

In a famous 1991 comparison test, Car and Driver compared the Syclone’s acceleration to a Ferrari. The small pickup packed a wallop thanks to a turbocharged 6-cylinder 280-hp engine and all-wheel drive. Reported 0-60 times are conflicting, though. Some boasted of seriously fast times like 4.5 seconds, while others have a more reserved (but still incredibly quick) 5.3 seconds.

Ford F-150 Lightning

Ford boldly resurrected the Lightning name for a unique – and fast — rendition of the best-selling F-150. The electric F-150 Lightning outfitted with the extended battery makes 563 hp and 775 lb.-ft. of torque. Ford claims that will be good for a 0-60 mph time of 4.5 seconds, making it the most powerful F-150 that Ford has ever produced.

And it still delivers on the pickup front with a towing capacity of 10,000 pounds. The extended battery is good for a driving range of about 300 miles on a single charge which means you can go fast and far with Ford’s first EV pickup.

Toyota Tundra Supercharged TRD

Toyota Tundra TRD Supercharged is one of the fastest production trucks in the world

TRD stands for Toyota Racing Development, and the clue to this truck’s performance capabilities is very much in the name. “Temporary insanity” is what one reviewer claimed when this rocket hit the streets in 2009.

The supercharger takes the truck’s 381-hp V8 into the stratosphere with 550 lb.-ft. of torque and more than 500 hp. But how fast is the supercharged Tundra? Well, some say it can hit 60 mph in 4.5 seconds, though some daredevils claim that these fast trucks can hit 60 in 4.4 seconds.

Dodge Ram 1500 TRX

Dodge Ram 1500 TRX

If you want a traditional gas-powered pickup to play with the EVs off the line, the Ram 1500 TRX is your best bet. This speedy pickup can do a sub-4 second 0-60 mph thanks to its supercharged 6.2L V8 which makes 708 hp.

With a towing capacity of 8,100 pounds and plenty of off-road capability, this pickup is capable of being both fun and practical. However, it is not the most fuel-efficient option, as the TRX gets only 11 mpg combined.

Rivian R1T

Rivian R1T

Newcomer Rivian has made a splash with the Rivian R1T, an electric pickup that the brand claims will deliver 300 miles of driving range and speedy acceleration. The truck’s four electric motors deliver 835 hp and 908 lb.-ft. of torque. Early tests have the Rivian pulling to 60 mph in right at or just over 3 seconds.

The R1T isn’t just designed to be fast in a straight line either. With a towing capacity of 11,000 pounds and a lot of off-road-ready features, this EV pickup is clearly intended to go both on and off-pavement with ease – and speed.

GMC Hummer EV Pickup

GMC Hummer Pickup EV

GMC isn’t holding back on the latest iteration of the Hummer, as a glance at the truck’s specs will reveal. The 2022 Hummer EV pickup is slated to come with an eye-watering 1,000 hp and 1,200 lb.-ft. of torque. All that power equates to a remarkable 3.0 second 0-60 in what is decidedly not a small truck.

GMC estimates the range at 350 miles for the pickup which also comes decked out with some unique off-road features. Between the off-road modes, adaptive air suspension, and “crabwalk” mode, the Hummer EV has more than a few tricks up its sleeve. That alongside being one of the fastest production trucks on the market makes it an interesting EV to consider.

The Fastest Production Trucks Will Keep Getting Faster

When it comes to creating a definitive list of the fastest production trucks, you can always expect some controversy. Performance statistics change depending on who’s recording them, and often brand claims aren’t always confirmed in real-world tests. Still, we have tried to put together a list that fairly represents the performance of the trucks on sale in North America, past and present.

And with EVs making significant inroads with major manufacturers, it’s anyone’s guess how long these gas-powered pickups will hold onto their claim as the fastest production pickups. If the first round of EV pickups is any indication, production trucks are about to get faster — a LOT faster — thanks to that on-demand electric torque. We concede that this list could see some big changes in the coming years. However, if you’re looking for a list of the fastest product trucks at present, these are worthy contenders.

Cannonball Run Countach Coming in Hot [Video] https://autowise.com/cannonball-run-countach-documentary/ Wed, 12 Jan 2022 14:30:05 +0000 https://autowise.com/?p=183217 Cannonball Run Countach Coming in Hot [Video] Read More »

]]>
The opening scene of “The Cannonball Run” is certainly memorable as the black 1979 Lamborghini Countach LP400 S rips down the highway to a guttural supercar soundtrack of its own making. It’s roughly 30-seconds of cinematic perfection as the camera pans along and the Cannonball Run Countach shreds through the gears.

Thanks to the 1981 action comedy film, the already lusted-after Lamborghini Countach became one of the better-known icons of America’s illegal transcontinental race, a relationship that Hagarty’s latest full-length documentary “The Cannonball Run Countach: Supercar Legend” explores in depth.

“The Cannonball Run Countach: Supercar Legend”

The full-length documentary dives into both the history of the Cannonball Run and of the famed Cannonball Run Countach. The film features detailed interviews with the likes of Brock Yates, the creator of the Cannonball Run, as well as past Cannonball Run winners and participants.

But it’s more than just a chronology of event history. The documentary also takes a look at the historical and geopolitical context that led to the creation of this highly illegal — and slightly absurd — transcontinental run and tries to tap into why the Cannonball Run has remained such an iconic event in the minds of a very niche group of motorsports enthusiasts.

Lamborghini Countach Fever

Lamborghini Countach rear view Icons like the 1979 Lamborghini Countach LP400 S that starred in the Cannonball Run’s silver screen adaptation are likely a good part of that infatuation. The documentary also takes a look at the history of the Countach — from design and production to all the little details, inside and out, that made the Countach, well, legendary.

Lamborghini Countach side view

From its statement-making scissor doors to the monstrous V12 situated right behind the driver, the Countach was the kind of stripped-down supercar that earned its adoring masses in the ’80s from both its looks and its performance. We dare say this Italian supercar has held up well to the test of time, too.

Lamborghini Countach front view

In 2021, the black Countach from the film was selected by the Hagerty Drivers Foundation to be inducted into the National Historic Vehicle Register, an honor shared with only 29 other vehicles to date. Hagerty Drivers Foundation manages the National Historic Vehicle Register in partnership with the U.S. Department of the Interior as a way to preserve America’s automotive heritage for future generations.

Lamborghini Countach interior

The Countach was restored with the tan interior seen in the film and features the front wing that served as the car’s “bumper.” Of course, the real magic lies in the 353 hp 4L V12 mated to a 5-speed manual transmission that leads to that goosebump-inducing opening scene.

Lamborghini Countach

If you’ve ever wondered what’s the draw of the Cannonball Run or what it’s like to drive a Lamborghini Countach, this documentary is for you. Plus if you’re nostalgic for that Countach soundtrack, the film features plenty of footage where you can revel in the sound of that glorious V12 roaring down a desert highway.

]]>
The British luxury coachbuilder Radford revealed the striking new interior design for its latest Radford Lotus Type 62-2 sportscar unveiled at an exclusive showcase in the UK Wednesday. Radford partnered with British luxury watch brand Bremont in a collaboration that meshes the old with the new — in a distinctly bespoke style.

A Look Inside the Radford Lotus Type 62-2

Radford Lotus Type 62-2 steering wheel

The interior of the Radford Lotus 62-2 was designed in conjunction with Bremont to deliver modern-day technology with bespoke customization while still giving a nod to the original 1969 Lotus 62. Staying true to both brands’ design aesthetics, the cockpit meshes minimal luxury into a stunning and sleek layout.

The cabin has blacked-out window tint with carbon fiber accents throughout, including on the a-pillars, headliner, and floor lining. Radford adds touches of opulence to the interior but without losing the essence of the sportscar’s underpinnings. This includes a fully exposed gear linkage for the manual transmission.

Radford Lotus Type 62-2 cabin

Driver-Centric Design

When it comes to the tech, Radford opts for a less is more approach in this driver-oriented car. Most of the in-car controls are physical switches and toggles. The digital screen is fully customizable, and the three smaller screens serve as the side view and rear camera displays.

And if you were wondering what the classic ’69 Lotus 62 was designed for, the Schroth racing harnesses and stripped-down cabin give a nod to the Type 62’s race car heritage.

Radford Lotus Type 62-2 seats

The interior also reflects elements of the iconic black and gold John Player Special (JPS) livery, with subtle gold accents in the otherwise blacked-out cabin. Even the start-stop button on the console was purposefully designed as the housing mirrors the iconic double ducktail exterior of the original Lotus 62.

Bremont Brings the British Class

Bremont watch radford lotus

And while Radford delivers on the sleek, bespoke sportscar goods, the showstopper centerpiece of the cabin is a pair of Bremont-crafted dials. The prominent Bremont clock and stopwatch add both elegance and a touch of nostalgia, with a retro design inspired by the mechanical rally timers of old. For continuity, the same milled and turned finish from the body of the clocks is also used in the switches throughout the cabin.

Radford Lotus Type 62-2 Limited Production: One of Twelve

Radford plans to produce only 12 special edition Lotus Type 62-2 in collaboration with Bremont. Making this ultra-limited run even more enticing, the mid-engined two-seater coupe will get the world-famous black and gold JPS livery. Powered by a 3.5L V6, the limited-edition John Player Special models get an upgraded supercharger that bumps the power output to just over 600 hp.

Potential buyers are invited to visit the Radford website to register their interest.

The Best Mustangs From 12 Eras of Pony Car Perfection https://autowise.com/best-mustangs/ Sat, 06 Nov 2021 00:45:16 +0000 http://54.237.33.45/?p=35796 The Best Mustangs From 12 Eras of Pony Car Perfection Read More »

]]>
The Ford Mustang has evolved through 12 distinct eras over the past 30+ years. Here are the best Mustangs from each of those 12 eras  — plus a few fun facts about the original Ford Mustang.

The Best Mustangs From Each Era

While it’s generally recognized that there are five distinct generations of the Mustang, that measurement is too coarse to be able to select a single model as the best for each time period which is why we opted for a few extra eras to make sure we covered the best-of-the-best of this iconic Ford car.

First Era: 1964.5-1966

1966 Mustang Fastback GT white - best mustangs

The selection from the first era is the Mustang Fastback GT. Introduced in 1966 as the “GT Equipment Package,” it included grille-mounted fog lamps, rocker panel stripes, and disc brakes. Inside, the GT option added a different instrument panel that included a speedometer, fuel gauge, temperature gauge, oil pressure gauge, and ammeter in five round dials.

The best engine option was the 4.7 L Windsor Hi-Po V8 with a 4-barrel carburetor and a solid lifter camshaft. This V8 producing 271 hp at a furious 6,000 rpm. The Mustang Fastback GT was a nimble car with decent power, but still very much limited by its Falcon underpinnings. But, surely, this is the ultimate ’60s Mustang?

Second Era: 1967-1968

1968 Mustang GT blue convertible

The top slot for Ford’s second era of the mustang goes to the 1968 Mustang GT convertible. With its more aggressive styling than the first-era Mustang convertible, it looked less like a Barbie car. For power, the aging 390 CID FE (Ford-Edsel) engine, which produced 325 hp at a leisurely 4,800 RPM, would be our pick of the best Mustangs of this era.

Third Era: 1969-1970

In the Mustang’s third era, there’s no doubt the car to have is the Boss 302, with a preference toward the 1969 model with Larry Shinoda’s subtle “C” decal design versus the 1970’s clumsy hockey stick decals. Both years carried the fabulous two-year-only Boss 302 motor, developed specifically to compete in the SCCA Trans-Am Championship against the Camaro, Firebird, Javelin, ‘Cuda, and Challenger. The Boss 302 was a Mustang designed to stop and turn as well as or better than it accelerated.

Fourth Era: 1971-1973

1970s Ford Mustang Grand Tourer

In its fourth era, the Mustang grew to what could most graciously be referred to as Grand Tourer rather than its earlier Sport Coupe proportions. Regardless of size, the ’70s Mustang Boss 351 carried one of Ford’s best motors ever — the 351 Cleveland R-Code. Rated at 330 hp, the R-Code was fitted with a 4-barrel carburetor, an aluminum intake manifold, solid lifters, dual-point distributor, a 6-quart oil pan, and cast aluminum valve covers. It had four-bolt main bearing caps and forged, shot-peened connecting rods. You were essentially getting one of the best Mustangs of its day with a race motor directly from the factory.

Fifth Era: 1974-1978

Best mustangs - black 1978 King Cobra

Say what you will about the Mustang II, but Ford sold a million of them. In fact, had the Mustang II not been downsized just prior to the days of fuel embargoes, climbing gas prices, emissions controls, and Corporate Average Fuel Economy, we may not have all the best Mustangs of today. The best bet of the Mustang II is the 1978 King Cobra, with the 302 CI V8, 4-speed manual transmission, an upgraded suspension with adjustable shocks, and a hood decal that can stand toe-to-toe with any Trans-Am.

Sixth Era: 1979-1986

1985 red Ford Mustang SVO

What’s the best ’80s Mustang? Probably this one. Ford took advantage of the newly-developed Fox platform of the Fairmont as the basis for the next generation of Mustang. Of this era, the real standout is the 205 hp 1985.5 SVO. The engine was a turbocharged version of the 2.3L 4-cylinder with advanced computer control for ignition and fuel delivery. The gearbox, suspension, and steering were all heavily upgraded, and the interior modified to make the SVO a true driver’s car and one of the best Mustangs of the ’80s.

Seventh Era: 1987-1993

1993 Mustang Cobra R

In the late ’80s and early ’90s, it was almost like the best Mustangs of the ’60s had returned. Ford offered 107 track-ready “R” versions of the 1993 Cobra, but only to buyers who held a current racing license. The Cobra R featured a 235 hp 5.0L engine, larger brakes, Koni shocks and struts, engine oil and power steering coolers, and a rear seat delete. As the Cobra R was race-oriented, A/C and a radio were not available. And while it didn’t come with a warranty, you could get it in any color you wanted — as long as it was Vibrant Red.

Eighth Era: 1994-1998

In 1996, Ford introduced a new aluminum 4.6L DOHC engine that produced 305 hp,  dropping 0–60 to 5.0 seconds in the Cobra. Perhaps giddy with delight over the modern engine, Ford also introduced the Mystic Cobra which featured a color-shifting paint with seven different colors. Green, purple, and amber were the most obvious. Two thousand 1996 Cobras were produced with the Mystic paint option, each accompanied by an SVT certificate of authenticity. It’s probably our favorite ’90s Mustang, even if it is a little unusual.

Ninth Era: 1999-2004

Ford Mustang Mach 1

Ford revived the Mach 1 name for 2003 and 2004 and created a car around it to fit between the GT and SVT Cobra in price and performance. It used the Cobra’s 13-inch Brembo front brakes, unique Tokico gas shocks and struts, and lower and stiffer springs. Power-wise, the Mach 1 offered a performance gain over the base GT with a 305 hp version of the DOHC 32-valve 4.6L V8. Retro touches were visible throughout the interior reminiscent of the original Mach 1, another one of the best Mustangs to grace the road.

Tenth Era: 2005-2009

Mid 2000s Ford Mustang convertible

With the return to the traditional styling of the Mustang, it seems most appropriate to select a car that reflects the First Era. In this case, our pick of the best Mustangs of the early 2000s is the base Mustang convertible with the 4.0L Cologne V6 engine (that can power the car from 0-60 in 7.30 seconds). The optional Pony Package adds suspension upgrades, 17-inch wheels and tires, a unique grille design with fog lamps, a rear deck spoiler, and unique door striping and emblems. This Mustang was not a car for racing, but one of the best Mustangs for relaxing cruises along the coast.

Eleventh Era: 2010-2014

Ford built a special production run of 50 absolutely insane, drag-race-only Cobra Jet Mustangs in 2012. In a near throw-back to the early 1960s and the Mustang A/FX race cars, Ford produced the Cobra Jet exclusively to compete in Stock and Stock Eliminator classes in NHRA, AHRA, and NMRA competition.

With the upgraded supercharger Ford claimed the engine produced 500 hp, which made it a $10,000 upgrade to gain 70 ponies. Right. Either someone at Ford spilled coffee on their calculator or they were playing fast and loose with the NHRA, et al. Based upon the low E.T.s achieved by the car in competition, calculations place the engine’s power in the 800 to 900 hp range. The best runs recorded? 0 – 60 in a reported 1.52 seconds, and quarters in the high eights.

Twelfth Era: 2015-Present

Ford Mustang Shelby GT350

The winner of the best Mustangs here, not just for this era, but across Ford Mustang history, is the Shelby GT350, which fits nicely between the GT and the overly racy for daily use GT350R. The Shelby GT350 is based on the S550 Mustang chassis, which features fully independent suspension all the way around. Ford engineers added MagneRide shocks, unique aerodynamics bodywork, and a naturally aspirated 5.2L V8 with a flat-plane crankshaft, chosen for better breathing, higher revs, and a great sound. It produces 526 hp and 429 lb.-ft. of torque.

Under the car, Ford selected two-piece iron rotors with aluminum hats for the GT350, 15.5 inches with 6-piston Brembo calipers up front and 15.0 inches with 4-piston calipers at the rear.  The Shelby GT350 runs 19-inch aluminum wheels all around, 10.5-inches up front and 11.0-inches out back. Is this the best-looking Mustang ever? While it will never have the style and flair of the early Pony cars, this one certainly is a looker.

Bonus: 7 Secrets of the Original Ford Mustang

Ford Mustang At The World Fair 1964

While we’re on the subject of Ford Mustangs, did you know that the original Ford Mustang boasts some interesting secrets? The term “Pony Car” was literally invented for the Mustang. Its impact on American car culture in the ’60s can’t be overstated. Let’s check out a few interesting facts from its origins.

Ford staged an introduction for the Mustang like no other car had ever seen. It was featured on a TV special, was a centerpiece at the 1964 Worlds Fair in New York, and played a supporting role in the hot new James Bond movie.

Ford Didn’t Always Have a Better Idea

1964 Four Door Ford Mustang

In the late 1960s, Ford’s advertising used the slogan “Ford has a better idea.” While it may have been true, it certainly did not apply to several concepts of the Mustang that were created before its public introduction.

One was a mini station wagon, or “shooting brake” if you prefer, which was produced by Intermeccanica, then Italian coachbuilder and now Canadian purveyor of fiberglass Porsche 356 replicas. Another was the sedan pictured above, which might have been enough of a drag to kill the entire Mustang line. Taking a pass on this dismal 4-door was their better idea.

The Disappearance of Mustang 100001

Ford Mustang 100001

Mustang serial #100001 has been on display at The Henry Ford museum since 1966. The car was built specifically for display but was inadvertently invoiced to a dealer in Newfoundland.  The dealer sold the car to an airline pilot on April 17, 1964.  Ford learned of the sale and tried to buy back the car, but the pilot refused.

Two years later, Ford approached the pilot, this time offering to trade him the 1 millionth Mustang off the line for his car. He accepted. Ford historians consider Mustang 100001 as the closest to the first Mustang that has been discovered. Even though it may not have been the first car off the line when production started on March 9, 1964, it likely was not far behind.

The Very First Mustang Sold

The First Ever Public-Sold Mustang

Gail Wise, then a 22-year-old recent college graduate, became the owner of the first-ever Ford Mustang. She bought it in 1964, two days before 1964 Mustangs were supposed to go on sale, and when she was driving it home she stopped traffic as drivers and pedestrians strained to get a better look at her new car. After being parked in the garage for 27 years, her husband Tom finally got around to restoring it.

What a Deal!

The list price for a 1965 Mustang was $2,320.96 — or about $16,800 when adjusted for inflation. Of course, today’s cars are much safer with crumple zones, anti-lock brakes, and airbags in every nook and cranny. And today’s most powerful engines emit fewer hydrocarbons into the atmosphere than even the base straight-six cylinder engine. Even still, that price does look like a good deal.

Four Motors, Lots of Horses

1964 Ford Mustang Engine

Right from the start, Ford offered buyers a choice of four different engines in the 1964.5 model year. The base option was the 170 CID 101 hp straight-6 cylinder engine. Stepping up from there, drivers could opt for a 260 V8 producing 164 hp with a two-barrel, a 210-hp 289 V8, and, beginning in June of that year, the powerful K-Code 4 barrel carb, solid lifter, 289 CID 271 hp V8 engine.

First Generation Mustangs in the Movies, Part One

Ford Mustang In Goldfinger

The Mustang made its cinematic debut in the 1964 James Bond film, Goldfinger. In exchange for the publicity, the Ford Motor Company donated a Lincoln Continental to be destroyed in the film’s famous car compactor scene. (Trivia tip: Even though the Lincoln weighs over two tons, the Ranchero remains level when the crushed car is loaded into the bed).

First Generation Mustangs in the Movies, Part Two

Ford Mustang Bullitt

Director Peter Yates’ emphasis on realism drove the chase scene in the motion picture Bullitt to movie greatness — right down to the soundtrack. Rather than relying on music to support the action, during the 9+ minute car chase, Yates elected to showcase the throaty roar of the Ford 390 V8 engine, with rapid-fire up and downshifts and squealing bias-ply tires. The natural sound captured during the filming of this iconic action scene helped earn the film an Academy Award nomination for Best Sound, perhaps the first and last nomination generated by the sounds of one of the best Mustangs ever made.
